What is Royal Court?

Royal Court (or just Royal) is a card game for two to four players that is based on the classic game of Bridge. It is a trick-taking game in which each player tries to capture as many cards as possible by playing matching suits. The player who collects the most cards at the end of the game wins!

The Cards

There are 52 cards in a deck of Royal Court cards, consisting of four suits: Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades. Each suit has thirteen cards numbered 2 through 10, plus an Ace (1) and a King (13). The Ace is high and the King is low.

The Ranks

In Royal Court, the rank of the card is important. The Ace is highest and the 2 is lowest. This means that if two or more players play cards of the same rank, the first card played (the "lead card") wins. If both players play an Ace, for example, the first Ace played would win. If both players play a 2, for example, then the second 2 played would win. This also applies to trump cards; if two players play a trump card of equal rank, the first trump played would win. Note that there are no ties in Royal Court--either you win or you lose!

The Play

The object of Royal Court is to capture as many cards as possible by playing matching suits. The player who collects the most cards at the end of the game wins! In order to win a trick, you must play a card that outranks all other cards played so far in that trick (the lead card). For example, if an Ace has been played as the lead card then any other Ace played will capture that trick. If two or more players play cards of equal rank in a trick, then whichever player played their card first will capture the trick (the lead card). Note that trump cards always outrank other suits no matter what rank they are; for example, an Ace trump will always beat an Ace from any other suit.

To begin play, each player is dealt six cards face down. The remaining cards are placed in a stack in the middle of the table (the deck), and one card is turned over to start off proceedings (this is called the "trump"). The player who receives this card starts off play and must lead with one of their own cards. Play then proceeds clockwise around the table with each player following suit if they can (playing another heart if they have one etc.), or playing any other card they wish including trump cards). When it's your turn to play, you must either follow suit or beat whatever was previously played in that particular trick (including any trump already played). Winning a trick simply means capturing it by playing either a higher ranking card than all other previously played or playing a trump which outranks all others previously played).

The aim of Royal Court is to take all six tricks--if this happens then you automatically win! However it's not always easy to do this so don't be too discouraged if you don't manage it on your first few attempts. Just keep practicing and eventually you'll get there!
